Chapter Eight
âDo you see anything?â Monty asked, looking across the computer.
âNot yet,â Olivia stated. âBut we did just start the recording. Give it a minute to warm up.â
Monty did her best to be patient, but the anticipation was starting to get to her. If this camera system recorded what happened on the day of Chip Dupontâs supposed death, she might be able to wrap things up rather quickly.
âThere,â Olivia said, adjusting the monitor before sitting back in her chair. âThat was about the time that I left to get my tools. You can see Amanda standing there by the body, and what? Did I just see that with my own eyes? But how?â
âYes, you did,â Monty said. âThe body just got up off the table and walked out the door with Amanda at its side.â
âBut how?â Olivia repeated.
âThe man was never dead in the first place,â Monty replied. âYou could see his chest moving up and down on the table. You were probably so busy training the new girl that day that you didnât notice.â
âNow, Iâm just embarrassed,â Olivia stated. âIf I had caught that the man was breathing, this whole thing wouldnât have gone this far. Now what? Do I just tell the chief that I was as observant as I should have been?â
âNo, you donât tell the chief anything at this point,â Monty replied. âWe still donât know all of the details.â
âIt seems pretty clear to me,â Olivia said.
âWell, there might be some things that add to this story,â Monty said. âLike, look closely at your assistant.â
âI see her,â Olivia replied. âSheâs a young, blonde student. Whatâs your point?â
âMy point is that I know her,â Monty said.
âOh, no, Monty, you didnât...â Olivia started.
âNo,â Monty replied. âI wasnât intimate with her, but I am dating her best friend. And I have evidence that she might have been dating Chip Dupont, so whatâs to say that she didnât help him out of the lab as well? All she had to do is tell you that crime lab was requesting her presence at the scene. She could have helped Chip out of the building and brought him here so there was evidence that he was dead, and then, the two of them could have booked a trip to...hmm...I donât know...the Bahamas while everyone else was sitting back wondering what transpired.â
âWell, there they are on tape, driving away from the lab,â Olivia said. âBut it still doesnât explain why people thought he was dead upon walking into his office.â
âYeah, Iâm stuck on that one too,â Monty said. âBut I think that another visit to Bernalillo Plastics might help clear that situation up. Iâd like to talk to the secretary that originally found the body. I heard that she was new too, and I also heard that she skipped out on the job after the body was found. Iâm starting to wonder if Mandy or Amanda as you call her played more than one part in this case. It would be crazy if she orchestrated everything.
