Chapter Eight

“Do you see anything?” Monty asked, looking across the computer.

“Not yet,” Olivia stated. “But we did just start the recording. Give it a minute to warm up.”

Monty did her best to be patient, but the anticipation was starting to get to her. If this camera system recorded what happened on the day of Chip Dupont’s supposed death, she might be able to wrap things up rather quickly.

“There,” Olivia said, adjusting the monitor before sitting back in her chair. “That was about the time that I left to get my tools. You can see Amanda standing there by the body, and what? Did I just see that with my own eyes? But how?”

“Yes, you did,” Monty said. “The body just got up off the table and walked out the door with Amanda at its side.”

“But how?” Olivia repeated.

“The man was never dead in the first place,” Monty replied. “You could see his chest moving up and down on the table. You were probably so busy training the new girl that day that you didn’t notice.”

“Now, I’m just embarrassed,” Olivia stated. “If I had caught that the man was breathing, this whole thing wouldn’t have gone this far. Now what? Do I just tell the chief that I was as observant as I should have been?”

“No, you don’t tell the chief anything at this point,” Monty replied. “We still don’t know all of the details.”

“It seems pretty clear to me,” Olivia said.

“Well, there might be some things that add to this story,” Monty said. “Like, look closely at your assistant.”

“I see her,” Olivia replied. “She’s a young, blonde student. What’s your point?”

“My point is that I know her,” Monty said.

“Oh, no, Monty, you didn’t...” Olivia started.

“No,” Monty replied. “I wasn’t intimate with her, but I am dating her best friend. And I have evidence that she might have been dating Chip Dupont, so what’s to say that she didn’t help him out of the lab as well? All she had to do is tell you that crime lab was requesting her presence at the scene. She could have helped Chip out of the building and brought him here so there was evidence that he was dead, and then, the two of them could have booked a trip to...hmm...I don’t know...the Bahamas while everyone else was sitting back wondering what transpired.”

“Well, there they are on tape, driving away from the lab,” Olivia said. “But it still doesn’t explain why people thought he was dead upon walking into his office.”

“Yeah, I’m stuck on that one too,” Monty said. “But I think that another visit to Bernalillo Plastics might help clear that situation up. I’d like to talk to the secretary that originally found the body. I heard that she was new too, and I also heard that she skipped out on the job after the body was found. I’m starting to wonder if Mandy or Amanda as you call her played more than one part in this case. It would be crazy if she orchestrated everything.
